Your character's race gives them special bonuses to their Ability Scores as well as features and traits that make each race unique. For example, some races, such as Drow, can see in the dark with their Dark Vision, due to living underground. Make sure you update your character's Ability Scores to reflect your race.
Some Dungeon Masters will allow players to select other races, such as a Centaur, for their characters. Ask your DM for more information!
